The story

A leading German grid operator supplies energy to seven million people while managing nearly half a million decentralized generation plants across a complex distribution network.

Technical specifications and safety procedures were scattered across disparate systems, forcing field teams to waste time manually verifying document versions. This fragmentation delayed operations and increased safety risks in a high-voltage environment where precision is critical.

The operator developed a generative AI assistant that ingests data from SharePoint and safety logs into a permission-aware RAG pipeline using Databricks. An AI gateway routes queries to the most efficient model for each task, while Unity Catalog ensures technicians only access authorized content. The system is launching through a strategic rollout, moving from a validatory pilot to 600 field workers and eventually 4,000 employees.
